What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence also reflects an ability to use intelligence, empathy, and emotions to enhance understanding of interpersonal dynamics

It can also be defined as accurately perceiving emotion, using emotions to facilitate thought, understanding emotion, and managing emotion

The concept was popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman, who suggested that EQ is often a more significant predictor of success in relationships and leadership than traditional intelligence

What is the difference between emotional intelligence ( EQ) and Intelligence quotient ( IQ )

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions while also recognizing and influencing the emotions of others.

While IQ (Intelligence Quotient) measures cognitive abilities and technical skills, Emotional intelligence focuses on the human side of intelligence and how we navigate social complexities and manage our internal state.

The core component to emotional intelligence

Self-Awareness: The ability to identify your own emotions as they happen. It involves understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and how your moods affect those around you.

Self-awareness is how an individual experiences and understands their own character, feelings, motives, and desires.

When you are self aware you have the capacity to direct attention inward and recognize oneself as an individual, separate from the environment and from other beings

​Self-Regulation: This goes beyond just suppressing  feelings. It’s the ability to control impulsive behaviors and think before acting, allowing you to respond to situations rather than react to them.

It involves managing emotions, thoughts & behaviors to achieve long-term goals, enhancing personal & professional success.

Techniques like mindfulness, goal-setting & self-monitoring can strengthen self-regulation skills & improve decision-making.

​Motivation: High emotional intelligence individuals are often driven by internal rewards rather than just external factors like money or status. They possess a passion for their work and a commitment to follow through on goals.

You will develop the ability to regulate emotions and stay motivated, even in challenging circumstances. EQ helps individuals identify what drives them internally and how to navigate obstacles that derail motivation.

​Empathy: This is the skill of recognizing and understanding the emotions of others. It allows you to see things from another person’s perspective and respond with genuine care.

The ability to imagine oneself as another person is a sophisticated process. However, the basic capacity to recognize emotions in others may be innate and may be achieved unconsciously.

Empathy exists on a spectrum, an individual can be more or less empathetic toward another individual and empirical research supports a variety of interventions that are able to improve empathy.

​Social Skills: This involves managing relationships to move people in desired directions, whether that’s through effective communication, conflict resolution, or teamwork.
